AMD has teamed up with Samsung to bring the technology currently used in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to the Exynos mobile processor.
As part of their keynote address at Computex, AMD executives announced that the Exynos mobile system-on-a-chip will include RDNA 2 graphics technology.
It is RDNA 2 technology that lies at the heart of modern gaming graphics cards and consoles. The innovation should significantly change flagship mobile devices.
Details are scarce at this time, but we know the next generation mobile GPU will support ray tracing and variable speed shading.
“The next place you will find RDNA 2 will be in the high-performance mobile phone market,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said onstage.
“AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung for several years to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market, and we are pleased to announce that we will add custom graphics IP to Samsung’s next flagship mobile SoC with ray tracing and variable shading capabilities. Speed. We look forward to Samsung providing more details later this year, “she said.
Ray tracing, which may appear in mobile chips, is a solution for creating realistic lighting, reflections and shadows, providing a higher level of realism than traditional rendering methods. NVidia’s Turing was the first architecture (2018) to enable real-time ray tracing on a GPU.
The latest flagship chip from the Korean company, the Exynos 2100, is already available on its Galaxy S21 phones. Unveiled in January, the processor features an ARM-developed Mali-G78 processor, which Samsung says can deliver 40 percent better graphics performance than its predecessor, the Exynos 990.
The Korean brand executives have previously hinted that the Exynos 2200 mobile GPU, which is being co-developed with AMD, could be the successor to the Exynos 2100. This may indicate a 2022 debut on the next Galaxy S. the way Apple will use the chip not only in smartphones, but also in laptops and tablets.
Some sources point out that the Exynos 2200 will be 25% faster than the Exynos 2100 and the GPU will be 150% faster.
